THURSDAY RESULTS
KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Darien Clarke (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) excelled in the field events and
Tommy Oliver (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) posted the top shot put throw, Thursday, as the Kutztown University-hosted Mondschein Multi commenced at Andre Reed Stadium.
Clarke currently holds third halfway through the decathlon after top three finishes in the shot put (second), high jump (second) and long jump (third). The sophomore from Middletown, Del., has 2,893 points and is less than 200 behind second-place Caleb Carney of East Stroudsburg.
KU's long-standing meet has a different feel this year with COVID-19 precautions in place and a reduced entry list. Only seven men from PSAC institutions are competing in the decathlon and six women are taking part in the heptathlon.
Thursday's festivities began on the track where Clarke ran an 11.66 in the 100-meter dash. Three straight field events followed and that's where Clarke made his move forward.
In the long jump, Clarke posted a top effort of 6.01m (19'8.75") for 589 points. He added 499 more points to his total with a second-place finish in the shot put. Clarke's top throw traveled 10.23m (33'6.75"), trailing only teammate Oliver.
Clarke then cleared 1.75m (5'8.75") in the high jump, second-best of the seven competitors, and gained 585 points. He concluded the day with a time of 57.52 in the 400-meter dash.
Oliver registered his event-best throw of 10.40m (34'1.50") in the shot put on his second throw, but was relegated to seventh in the overall standings with 1943 points after a tough result in the high jump.
Clarke and Oliver will tackle the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500-meter run on Friday beginning at noon.
