Baseball rocked by hard-hitting West Chester

ASTON, Pa. -- West Chester had its way offensively with the Kutztown University baseball team Friday afternoon, swinging its way to 26-3 and 13-1 PSAC East victories at the Maplezone Sports Village.

Kutztown (16-16, 10-15 PSAC East) took a 2-0 lead in its opening at-bats of game one, but the Golden Rams responded with 10 runs in the bottom of the first, setting a tone that didn't change throughout the day.

West Chester (12-7, 12-7 PSAC East) hit the ball hard in both ends of the twin bill, crushing eight home runs (seven in game one), three triples and eight doubles as part of a 36-hit barrage.

GAME 1
West Chester 26, Kutztown 3

Gavin Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) smacked a two-run home run in the top of the first to put Kutztown on top early, but the lead was short-lived with the Golden Rams erupting for 10 runs on seven hits. Justin Horn capped the inning with a two-run dinger of his own, putting a premature end to Trevor Leverington's (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) day.

West Chester scored another run in the second, four in the fourth, nine in the fifth and two in the sixth on their way to a 20-hit performance. The hosts' 26 runs were the most in a game against Kutztown since Mansfield scored 25 in a 25-9 victory back in 1993.

Lost in the offensive onslaught was the strong pitching of WCU starter Braeden Fausnaught who went five innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight. He gave up two runs (one earned).

Kutztown's four hits came from four different players. Andy Blum (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Colin Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) and Mike Piscotty (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) each singled.

Golden Rams' lead-off hitter Zack Wright was 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and three RBIs. Catcher JR Gifford homered, doubled twice and drove in seven, while Hunter Hall knocked in four and scored a team-high four runs.

GAME 2
West Chester 13, Kutztown 1

Redshirt sophomore Matt Ziminsky (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) struck out eight over 5.1 innings and kept the Maroon and Gold within striking distance until West Chester expanded upon a 5-0 lead with an eight-run sixth.

The Golden Rams broke a scoreless tie in the third, behind a two-run triple from Wright and an RBI-double from Nick D'Amore, each of whom went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Kutztown scored its only run on a Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) single in the sixth that plated Ethan Martini (Feasterville-Trevose, Pa./Father Judge), but WCU's Culver Hughes kept the Bears off balance en route to a complete game victory. He scattered four hits and struck out five.

Brian Verratti joined Wright and D'Amore in leading the Golden Rams with three hits, and Horn had four RBIs.

Antonio Rossillo (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had half of KU's hits, going 2-for-3 with a double.
