KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Midfielder
Kayla Argen (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) of the Kutztown University women's soccer team made some history Wednesday. The senior was voted a United Soccer Coaches Association Division II First Team All-American. Argen becomes just the eighth player in program history to earn All-America honors.
Argen is the Golden Bears' first All-American since 2018. She joins former teammates
Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) (3x), Jenna Bracken and Emily Zwiercan, along with Alaina Curry, Sam Costello, Maria Borland and Chelsea Deeter.
It was a banner 2021 season for Argen, as the postseason awards continue to flow in for the Cresco native. Within the last month, Argen was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division Athlete of the Year and earned All-PSAC East First Team and D2CCA First Team All-Atlantic Region.
Argen, a team captain this season, was irreplaceable in 2021, on both ends of the field. The midfielder led the Golden Bears with 10 goals and five assists for 25 points. Her 10 goals ranked fourth in the PSAC and she was first in shots (89) and shots on goal (49). She had either a goal or an assist in 12 of KU's 20 games this season, including five game-winning goals. Argen was the first PSAC Athlete of the Year for KU since Emily Zwiercan brought home the honor in 2017. Argen started all 20 games this season and 53 of 58 career games played, totaling 17 goals and 15 assists, the latter fifth in program history.
In the classroom she is just as successful. Argen was selected to the NCAA Division II Academic All-District 2 First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A senior sport management major holding a 3.75 cumulative GPA, she was the offensive driver for the nationally-ranked Golden Bears all season long, producing team-highs of 10 goals, five assists, 25 points, 89 shots, 49 shots on goal and five game winning goals.
Kutztown's 2021 season was one for the record books. At 17-1-2, the Golden Bears set a new record for regular season wins and highest overall winning percentage in a season (.900), along with establishing a new benchmark for conference victories in a season (15). The PSAC East Division champions qualified for both the PSAC and NCAA Division II Tournaments.
