INSTITUTE, W.Va. – After a scoreless first half, the Kutztown and West Virginia State women's soccer teams scored a flurry of goals in the second half, each netting twice in a span of 27 minutes, as the teams finished with a 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game.

The Golden Bears went 1-0-1 overall on the opening weekend of the 2026 regular season, defeating Charleston 3-1 on Friday night, also in the state of West Virginia. In that game, the Maroon and Gold fell behind and had to complete a comeback to win. On Sunday, they trailed twice in the second half, both times finding an equalizer, but ran out of time to tally a winner.

Giavanna Marciano (Trappe, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) scored a goal for the second time in as many games. Her's came in the 76th minute to secure the 2-2 tie. Classmate
Alexis Varela (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) recorded KU's first goal in the 56th minute, which answered the host Yellow Jackets' opening goal in the 49th minute. WVSU answered Varela's strike just 0:26 later to go back on top 2-1.

The Golden Bears outshot the Yellow Jackets 14-5 overall, 6-2 on target, and also held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Morgan O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) started and played all 90 minutes in goal.

Kutztown remains on the road and has played half of its season-long four-game road trip to begin the 2026 campaign. KU will travel to Scranton for a matchup against Lackawanna College this Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 3:30 p.m., in a non-conference game, before opening up Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition next Saturday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m., at defending PSAC champion Shepherd.
