Top seed Kutztown taken down in penalties against Millersville in PSAC Quarterfinals

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Goals were hard to come by Tuesday night until a penalty shootout decided the contest. The top-seeded and third-ranked Kutztown University women's soccer team converted one less penalty kick than fourth-seeded Millersville as the Marauders tied the game at 1-1 in the second half and made all five of their penalty kicks to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Quarterfinal Round matchup at Keystone Field.

The Golden Bears (17-1-1 overall) got on the scoreboard first thanks to a first-half goal from Isabella Rossetti (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) as she was on the other end of a pass by Dana Wentz (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) in the 41st minute to stake KU to the 1-0 lead, one which it took into halftime.

From there Millersville threatened the Kutztown goal a majority of the second half until it found the equalizer in the 52nd minute. Alexis Spencer headed in a corner kick taken by Cassie Blyth.

The two teams had an even amount of shots in the second half (6-6) and the first overtime period (2-2), with both squads finding scoring chances that they could not convert.

After two scoreless, 10-minute overtime periods, the teams traded the first four successful shots from the penalty mark each way. Brittany Arentz (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern), Sadie Goad (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley), Abbey White (Bernville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) and Alisea Munshower (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) all tallied successful penalty attempts. But in the fifth and final shootout, the Golden Bears attempt was saved by Millersville goalie Regan Kolinski and then the Marauders converted their chance to claim the victory.

Kutztown, which was ranked first in the Atlantic Region last week, will now await its fate in the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled for 6 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 15.
