FREDERICK, Md. -- Rachel Wagner (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Depew) recorded a 190.4 average, Saturday, at the Mount Shootout as the Kutztown University women's bowling team posted a 4-1 record and the second-highest pin total.
Wagner's average was the third-highest among bowlers taking part in all five games and sixth overall. Teammate
Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial), the reigning East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week was ninth with a five-game average of 180.0.
Kutztown (10-5), ranked 15th in the NTCA DII/DIII Preseason Poll, defeated No. 10 Chestnut Hill for the third time in as many matches this season, 881-795, in its first match of the day.
Lindsey Gotwalt (Hanover, Md./Meade) paced the Bears with a 207, while Wagner followed at 194.
Sromovski broke into the 200s with a 201 against Howard, but KU suffered its only defeat, 795-758.
The Golden Bears quickly put the setback behind them and bowled their best score of the afternoon in a 910-748 win over first-time opponent Pitt-Greensburg. Wagner's 235 --the best individual game by a KU bowler Saturday-- led the way, with Sromovski missing her second straight 200 game by a single pin.
Wagner kept the momentum going with another terrific game of 223 in an 878-802 victory against Felician. Sromovski bowled a 188, while
Ashley Fister (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) and
Madison Lund (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) sported matching 161s.
KU closed the day with another first-time opponent, La Roche, and emerged with an 867-751 triumph. Lund rolled her high game of the day with a 191. Wagner followed at 180 and
Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) drew into the lineup with a solid 177.
Host Mount St. Mary's, ranked 13th in the NTCA's National Poll, threw four games in the 900s to take a commanding lead into Sunday's action. The Mount sits at 4,688 pins, 394 ahead of the second-place Golden Bears (4,294). Kutztown holds a 38-pin advantage over Coppin State (4,256), with Felician (4,137) and Howard (3,822) rounding out the top five.
Sunday's matches begin at 9 a.m. from Terrace Lanes.
