Women's swimming named CSCAA Scholar All-America Team for fifth straight semester

CSCAA Release

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kutztown University women's swimming completed its second straight academic year of being named a College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team in both the fall and spring semesters when the organization announced its Spring 2020 honorees.

Under the leadership of head coach Tim Flannery, who completed his 24th season in 2019-20, the Golden Bear women have achieved Scholar All-America Team status in each of the last five semesters dating back to Spring 2018. Kutztown has received this honor at the conclusion of 12 semesters since 2010.

Kutztown was one of 461 schools to receive the award following the spring semester. Teams were selected on the basis of their spring grade point averages and the 461-team total encompasses 17,982 student-athletes.

"No team was unaffected by the coronavirus pandemic, but the athletic department and university can be proud of Kutztown's academic performance as a team and the work of Coach Flannery."

Additional institutional adjustments to grading systems surrounding COVID-19 and a nationwide move to online learning resulted in grade point averages (GPAs) nearly one-quarter letter grade higher than previously. As a result, the CSCAA will not be publishing team GPAs. The Spring 2020 list of honorees also does not include teams at institutions that switched entirely to pass/fail grading.

Kutztown was one of 10 women's programs to be honored from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), marking an 83.3% inclusion rate for the conference, which has 12 schools that sponsor the sport. The Golden Bears were joined in representing the PSAC by Cal U, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Gannon, Indiana (Pa.), Millersville, Shippensburg and West Chester.

Founded in 1922, the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), is the nation's first organization of college coaches. The mission of the CSCAA is to advance the sport of swimming and diving with coaches at the epicenter of leadership, advocacy, and professional development.
