HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Facing its second regionally-ranked opponent in as many days, Kutztown women's tennis competed to the end in a 7-0 loss to West Liberty at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort on Monday morning.
Amanda Grebosky (Reisterstown, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) and
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) each forced third sets in their singles matches, but the Hilltoppers swept doubles and won all six singles flights en route to the shutout.
The Golden Bears (1-6) got a jolt at the start of singles when Grebosky, a junior from Reisterstown, Maryland, won the opening set of her first flight match against Nathalia Valencia, the 16th-ranked singles player in the ITA Atlantic Region.
Grebosky pushed Valencia in the second set, too, before falling 7-5. Valencia won the decisive third-set 10-point tiebreaker, 10-4.
At fifth singles, Maher was also an opening set winner over Luisa Agudelo, 6-3. Agudelo recovered to win the second 6-4 and the third 10-4. Freshman
Devyn Campbell (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) took five games off Carleyah McLean at fourth singles, but fell in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.
West Liberty, ranked seventh in the ITA Atlantic Region Rankins, remained unbeaten on the season at 7-0 with Monday's victory. The Hilltoppers have defeated Kutztown in each of their four meetings in Hilton Head Island since 2012.
Kutztown faces ITA Midwest Region No. 7 Michigan Tech, Tuesday, at 4 p.m., before closing out its Spring Break trip on Wednesday.
