First-half struggles cost men's basketball at Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- Kutztown surrendered a 14-2 run over the final 3:57 of the first half and could never work its way back into contention in an 83-71 PSAC East loss at Bloomsburg Wednesday night.

The Golden Bears remained in a three-way tie for the division's final two tournament spots with one regular season game remaining after Shepherd and Lock Haven also lost Wednesday.

Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) and Sean Griffin (Abington, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) had six first-half points and Tarojae Brake (Coatesville, Pa./Octorara) added five, but the Maroon and Gold couldn't find their offensive rhythm shooting just 11-of-33 (33.3%) and 1-of-7 (14.3%) from distance.

Despite its scoring troubles, KU (11-16, 9-12 PSAC) led for much of the opening 13 minutes. Bloomsburg took its first lead, 16-15, on a pair of Maqi Watons free throws with 7:07 left and the teams proceeded to swap the lead four more times before the break.

All six of Generett's first half points came during a span of 1:13, the last coming on a steal and score with 4:21 to go that put the Bears up 23-21.

The Huskies (11-17, 8-14) started their march to the half shortly thereafter.

Max Wagner (seven) and Justin Anderson (five) combined for 12 of Bloomsburg's 14 points during its 14-2 run to close the half. Kutztown could only counter with a Griffin layup over the final 3:57 and went to the locker room down double figures, 35-25.

Akello Mosby's (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver) layup on the Bears' first possession of the second half trimmed Bloomsburg's lead to eight, but Wagner answered at the other end. The hosts maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way, expanding it to as many as 18.

Brake registered his first double-double as a Golden Bear (second career) with 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, but endured a tough shooting night going 5-for-20 overall (3-of-10 3FG).

Generett had 14 points and Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter), who was sidelined the last two games, returned with 10 points and eight boards.

Kutztown won the battle on the boards 44-40 and its bench nearly doubled the scoring productivity of Bloomsburg's, 29-14.

The Huskies used just six players in the contest, but all were effective. Anderson and Wagner shared the game-high with 21 points each. Wagner added a game-high 13 rebounds.

Four Bloomsburg starters scored in double figures, with Ky Mauras (13) and Sam Saxton (10) joining Anderson and Wagner. Watson had a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. The Huskies shot 50% (31-of-62) after connecting at a 58% clip (18-of-31) in the second half when they outscored KU 48-46.

Kutztown leading scorer Wesley Butler (Reading, Pa./Reading) was not immune to his team's offensive woes. Though he recorded a team-high three steals, Butler was limited to nine points on 3-of-15 shooting. It marked just the second time in 27 games Butler failed to reach double figures and snapped a 20-game streak of doing so.

The Golden Bears finish off the regular season at home Saturday afternoon against PSAC East leader Shippensburg. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
