Kutztown’s season comes to an end in defeat to East champ Shippensburg Saturday

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team had its 2019-20 season come to a close Saturday afternoon as it fell to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division champion Shippensburg University 76-57 in a PSAC East game at Keystone Arena.

The Golden Bears finished the year 11-17 overall and 9-13 in the PSAC, missing out on the PSAC Tournament by one game.

Head coach Bernie Driscoll and his staff honored their two seniors prior to the game, in captain Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) and Ryan 'Boz' Bernstein (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep). Townsend was a four-year member of the Golden Bears and a team captain. Townsend appeared in 90 games, starting 40 of them throughout his four years. He totaled 568 points, 71 blocks and 553 rebounds, which ranks ninth all-time in program history on the glass. Townsend was twice named the PSAC East defensive athlete of the week this season. He ranked seventh in the PSAC with 7.6 rebounds per game. Bernstein played just one season in a Maroon and Gold uniform. He played two seasons at Division I Maine, where he led the team in minutes, assists and steals as a sophomore. He then went to Kent State, where he redshirted, followed by one year at Mansfield and this year at KU. This season, the Bronx, N.Y., native accumulated 256 points, 104 assists, 69 rebounds and 29 steals. His 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio leads the PSAC and he also ranked in a tie for eighth in the conference with 3.9 assists per game.

Tarojae Brake (Coatesville, Pa./Octorara) led Kutztown with 10 points, followed by eight each from Bernstein, Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca) and Akello Mosby (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver). Mosby also added eight rebounds. Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) and Michael Smith III (Chester, Pa./Chester) each chipped in seven points for KU.

The Raiders (22-6, 18-4) fell behind early 3-0, 6-4 and 9-7 after back-to-back-to-back three-pointers by Bernstein and Arens (2), but they scored the game's next 11 points to go ahead 18-9 and never looked back, leading the rest of the way and heading into next week's playoffs with momentum as the top seed.

Wesley Butler (Reading, Pa./Reading), who finished with four points, set the program-record for points by a freshman in a season with 510. Austin Laughlin (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) recorded three points and Sean Griffin (Abington, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) rounded out the scoring for KU with two points.
