Golden Bears upset No. 7 North Carolina A&T, move up a spot at Northeast Classic

CROYDON, Pa. -- A 244 game from Ashley Fister (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) and 202 by Madison Burkert (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) propelled the Kutztown University women's bowling team to its first victory over a top-10 opponent this season as the Golden Bears knocked off No. 7 North Carolina A&T, 998-890, during traditional format play, Saturday, at the Northeast Classic.

Though it was KU's only win in five matches on the day, it was a big one. The Golden Bears are no stranger to pulling upsets on nationally-ranked Division I schools, but a stellar performance by its entire lineup was crucial to taking down the Aggies. Fister and Burkert were nearly joined in the 200s by freshman Rachel Wagner (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) and sophomore Lindsey Gotwalt (Hanover, Md./Meade), who finished with scores of 192 and 191, respectively. Dana Henry (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) registered a 169, allowing KU to snap a three-match winless streak against North Carolina A&T dating back to 2015.

Kutztown faced three nationally-ranked opponents on the day and another --Chestnut Hill-- which was receiving votes in the current NTCA Poll.

The Griffins pulled out a tight 830-807 win over Kutztown in the first match of the day for both teams. Gotwalt led the way for KU with a 190 --her first of three straight 190+ games. Henry followed at 162, while Burkert (157) and Wagner (156) in close pursuit.

After stunning North Carolina A&T, the Bears were dealt a 917-788 setback by Saint Francis Brooklyn. Gotwalt remained in the top 25 of the individual standings with a team-leading 192, while Burkert rolled a 177 and Wagner a 170.

No. 17 Fairleigh Dickinson topped the Bears 962-825, despite a 189 from Wagner, and No. 21 Adelphi edged KU in the final frame, 966-934. Burkert paced the Maroon and Gold in its last match of the day with her second 200+ game (212). Gotwalt (185), Henry (184), Wagner (182) and Fister (171) also played well in KU's second-highest scoring match of the day.

For the day, Burkert led the team with a 185.4 average, knocking down 927 pins in five games. Gotwalt was just two total pins back and averaged 185, while Wagner collected a 177.8 average (889 pins in five games).

Kutztown will finish up play at AMF Bristol Pike Lanes on Sunday in best-of-7 bracket play. The Golden Bears moved up from 21st to 20th in the team standings with 8,667 pins and a 176.9 average. They can finish as high as 17th and will face 19th-place Maryville, the 15th-ranked team in the country, at 8:30 a.m.
