KU Cheerleading competing in UCA National College Cheerleading and Dance Championship in Orlando this weekend

Event Information

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University cheer team will be heading to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., this weekend to compete in the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) National College Cheerleading and Dance Championship.

This is the third year attending in the Small Co-ed Division II division for the Golden Bears, when in previous year, they competed in an all-girls Division I division.

On Friday the gameday team will showcase skills preformed at football and basketball games this season to kick off the competition. This portion of the competition is called College Gameday and is reflective of a true gameday atmosphere.

Saturday will highlight more of a traditional competitive routine where Kutztown will compete against 17 teams to qualify for the final round.

"The team is more mentally prepared than ever this year and they feel more focused and prepared having been working since August," said head coach Crystal Swift. "The key this year is keeping the routine clean and fun. The team wants to represent the University and their Alumni in the best light and make them feel proud of what they put on the mat."

On Sunday KU cheer will perform both routines one final time for the World Championship, competing against teams from all over the globe. Last year Kutztown earned a Silver medal in World Gameday.

"I'm proud of the hard work this team has put forth this year," Swift said. "Their overall drive and mental focus to be successful has demonstrated what it means to be a true winner. Regardless of what happens his weekend this team has come together with faith, focus and fun to represent what it means to be the best that they can be."

The high-flying and successful KU cheer team can be seen at home Kutztown University men's and women's basketball games at Keystone Arena. KU hosts Shippensburg University for a double-header this Wednesday, Jan. 29, beginning with the women's game at 5:30 p.m.
