Box Score PHILADELPHIA -- Sophomore
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) picked up a straight set win at fourth singles, Monday, but the Kutztown University women's tennis team was defeated by Chestnut Hill, 6-1, in its fall opener.
Maher turned back Nicole Yang 6-1, 6-1 for her fifth career singles victory to account for the Golden Bears' (0-1) only point.
KU did win another match, though, as
Elyssa Tomczyk (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) and
Kalena Grey (Reading, Pa./Reading) held off Yang and Mariana Sanchez, 6-4, at third doubles. The Griffins (2-1) were able to claim the doubles point with a 6-2 win from Mia Covic and Barbara Broville at No. 1 and a 6-1 victory from Carlota Garcia Arguelles and Gianna Vassalluzzo at No. 2.
Golden Bear freshman
Devyn Campbell (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) won five games in her first collegiate singles match, a 6-3, 6-2 setback to Garcia Arguelles at No. 3. Tomczyk dropped an eight-game pro set to Vassaluzzo, 8-6, and Grey fell to Sanchez, 8-4, in the same format at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
Kutztown will have two weeks of preparation for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championships, which will be contested at Bloomsburg Oct. 5-7.
