KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Senior midfielder
Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) set a new single-game career-high with nine points, including the 100th of her career, as the Kutztown University women's lacrosse team surged by Shippensburg, 15-6, in a PSAC game at Andre Reed Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Schmidt had a natural hat trick in the first half,
Makayla Bowman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and
Erin Vaughan Ware (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) each scored a pair and the Golden Bears led 8-0 before the Raiders got on the board with just 16 seconds remaining before halftime.
Kutztown (2-2 PSAC, 3-4) outshot the Raiders 15-9 in the opening 30 minutes and got a strong effort from junior
Megan Vaughan (Prince Frederick, Md./Southern), who was making just her second start in the cage. Vaughan stopped six first-half shots from Ship (2-2, 4-4), three of which came on free-position attempts.
Schmidt and the Bears continued to roll in the second half. The Hanover native set up goals from
Jordan Klebe (Bishopville, Md./Stephen Decatur) and Bowman early in the period and scored three more of her own to tie a career-high with six goals on the afternoon. Schmidt's nine points are tied for the second most in a game by a Golden Bear since KU reintroduced its women's lacrosse program in 2008. Her six goals are tied for the fifth most in a game in program history.
Vaughan Ware totaled six points on a game-high four assists and two goals, while Bowman added five points on four goals and a helper.
Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) also had a multi-point game, finishing with a goal and an assist.
The Maroon and Gold finished with 32 shots to Shippensburg's 19. KU held a commanding 16-7 advantage in draw controls, led by five from
Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) and three from Watkins.
Rylee Hill (Romansville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan),
Amanda Lehman (York, Pa./West York Area), Schmidt and Watkins had four ground balls apiece. KU had a 27-24 edge at the final horn.
Four days after
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) got her first career win while filling in at goalie during KU's victory at Slippery Rock, Vaughan notched hers with a nine-save performance.
Alana Cardaci had a team-high three goals for the Raiders and pulled into the top five in the PSAC in goals scored this season. Madi Newman, Kyra Shank and Maddy Siejk also scored and Shaely Gamble turned away 10 shots for Ship.
Kutztown will hold its Lax-4-Life game promoting suicide prevention awareness in young adults and adolescents this coming Saturday when Gannon visits Andre Reed Stadium for a 1 p.m. start.
