READING, Pa. -- Kutztown University women's bowling won its final three Baker matches while compiling more than 2,800 pins to earn the ninth seed, Friday, in the seeding round of the 2019 East Coast Conference Championship hosted by the Golden Bears at Hiester Lanes.
The Maroon and Gold shook off a slow start, recovering in time to narrowly remain above the bottom four and avoid a Friday afternoon match that began double elimination best-of-7 bracket play.
Kutztown (71-55) jumped to ninth at the conclusion of five seeding matches with a total pinfall of 4,569 (182.8 average). The Golden Bears are 5-1 in their last six best-of-7 bracket style matches and will meet No. 8 seed Roberts Wesleyan, on Saturday morning at 10:30.
Adelphi, ranked No. 17 in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Poll, bowled three games of 217 or better in defeating KU, 1030-871, in Friday's opening match. The Bears also fell to Felician, 930-889, before winning their next three.
Kutztown's day took a turn for the better with a 906-862 victory over Wilmington (Del.). The hosts carried that momentum forward in a 977-802 win against Daemen and a 926-862 triumph over Molloy. While the wins pushed
Joseph Ambrose's team over the 70-win mark for the second straight season and third in the last four, it was the elevated pin count that mattered most with seeding entirely based on total pinfall.
Sophomore
Dana Henry (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) paced KU with a 19.8 frame average.
Madison Burkert (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) (18.7),
Lindsey Gotwalt (Hanover, Md./Meade) (18.6),
Keanna Delp (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) (18.1) and
Angela Kozma (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) (18.06) all provided valuable averages in the 18s.
This weekend's East Coast Conference champion will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.
