SINKING SPRING, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's bowling team got off to a hot start in the Golden Bear Classic at Berks Lanes on Friday. The hosts rolled the third-highest score in the opening of Baker format play with a 960 to beat Walsh and wound up with a 3-2 record and ninth in the overall standings.
The Golden Bears' bookend games were their best against Walsh in their first round victory. KU registered a 208 in game one and a match-best 216 in game five to take down the Cavaliers, 960-788.
It was a tough go for the Maroon and Gold in round two as they fell to nationally-ranked No. 19 Mount St. Mary's, 930-789.
Coach
Joseph Ambrose implored his team not to let the Mount St. Mary's result carry over into KU's round three match with Morgan State, but early on it seemed to. The Golden Bears (54-49) turned it on late, though, with a 214 and 200 in their final two games to take a 59-pin victory, 887-828.
Kutztown topped Coppin State, 828-798, for its third win of the day, but fell to No. 23 Duquesne, 960-904, in the finale despite a pair of 200+ games. The Golden Bears registered their best game of the day in the tightly contested match, putting forth a 220 in game two against the Dukes.
Sophomore
Dana Henry (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) paced KU with a 19.8 frame average over 31 frames on Friday.
Angela Kozma (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) and
Keanna Delp (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area), who each bowled the maximum 50 frames, finished with 17.7 and 17.2 averages.
No. 9 Saint Francis (Pa.), which bowled a Baker 300 game during its opening round win, claimed Friday's top spot with a total pinfall of 5,066 (202.6 average). Duquesne was second at 4,729 (189.2), Adelphi third at 4,652 (186.1) and Caldwell fourth at 4,590 (183.6).
Roberts Wesleyan will join the Golden Bear Classic on Saturday as pin counts are reset and teams begin a separate two-day event. The tournament will continue with five Baker format matches, before turning over to best-of-7 Baker bracket play on Sunday.
Bowling begins at 9:30 a.m. with Kutztown taking on LIU Post.
