DOUGLASSVILLE, Pa. -- The 25th-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team moved above .500 on the season with a perfect 5-0 record, Sunday, to win the Bowl for the KUre Baker Challenge at Jay Lanes.
Junior
Renee Riffey (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) recorded the second-highest frame average at 20.4 with rookie teammate
Ashley Fister (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) close behind at 19.32 as both Golden Bears received All-Tournament Team honors.
KU (51-47) exceeded the 1,000 pin barrier in two of its five wins and was over 900 pins in its remaining matches. Prior to Sunday, the Maroon and Gold's only 1,000-pin match this season was a 1,023-981 win over then No. 7 Maryland Eastern Shore on Nov. 16.
The Golden Bears started with a 1,008-798 win over Roberts Wesleyan. They comfortably defeated Saint Thomas Aquinas, 907-718, and St. Francis Brooklyn, 1020-878, to move to 3-0 on the day.
A familiar foe over the last few weeks was up next in Felician. Kutztown emerged on the winning side for the fourth time in five matches against the Golden Falcons --all in the last nine days-- 949-888.
First-place KU went up against second-place Molloy for the tournament title and the match lived up to its billing. The Bears downed the Lions by a mere seven pins, 901-894.
Riffey (second) and Fister (fourth) both ranked within the top five in frame average on Sunday.
Angela Kozma (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) had an 18.8 average,
Laura Hartley (Mt Pleasant Mills, Pa./Midd-West) had an 18.4 and
Keanna Delp (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) a 17.9. Reserves
Dana Henry (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) and
Alexis Case (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) also contributed to the Golden Bears' success.
Kutztown heads to Berks Lanes next weekend where it will host the Golden Bear Classic Friday through Sunday.
