PREVIEW: No. 8 Kutztown Wrestling Eyes First Ever PSAC Division II Dual Championship Tomorrow at Shippensburg

Video (Ship match)

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The eighth-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team has had a season to remember thus far. And it's not over yet. KU travels to take on Shippensburg University tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 14, with a shot at claiming the program's first ever league championship.

A win tomorrow night would give the Golden Bears (13-1 overall, 5-1 PSAC) a share of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Division II Dual-Meet Championship. They would be considered co-champions with Pitt-Johnstown (6-1 PAC), and if Gannon (5-1) defeats Mercyhurst (4-2) tonight, the PSAC would have tri-champions.

For the first time in league history no team champion was determined from the PSAC Tournament, which Kutztown hosted back on Dec. 8. The dual champion (s) are crowned based on dual results within the conference vs. respective NCAA level opponents.

The Maroon and Gold wrapped up their home portion of the regular season last Friday, Feb. 8, in style, shutting out East Stroudsburg 47-0 on senior night. They racked up four pins and two tech. falls in holding an opponent scoreless for the first time since Jan. 10, 2017, in a 37-0 victory at Millersville. All seven seniors; John Barlow (Upper Chichester, Pa./Chichester), Christopher Crane (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional), No. 12 Chad Haegele (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood), James Meyer (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East), Anthony Petril (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby (Ursinus)), No. 1 Jeff Reimel (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and No. 6 T.C. Warner (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Bloomsburg)) all recorded victories in their final bout on the mat of Keystone Arena.

Along with that senior group, sophomore No. 12 Matt Wilde (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area (Ursinus)), juniors Lucas Miller (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown Area) and Connor Rogovich (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and redshirt-sophomore Andrew Dunn Jr. (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (Virginia Tech)) all sport at least a .500 or better overall record this season. Jake Jones (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and Joe Renne (Great Meadows, N.J./Hackettstown) are also regulars in the lineup. Jones is coming off two straight victories.

Kutztown has won its last 13 scored dual-meets with the lone loss this season coming at the hands of then-No. 6 Pitt-Johnstown by a score of 23-15. Since then, its rattled off 13 consecutive wins and had a strong showing at PSAC Championships. Wilde earned a fifth-place finish at 125, Petril was fourth at 141 and Dunn took home second-place honors at 285, falling only to a Division I opponent from Lock Haven. Miller and Mikey O'Brien (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) each ended in sixth in at 133 and 165 respectively.

A win Thursday at Ship would not only give Kutztown a share of its first-ever conference title, but also keep the positive momentum rolling along into the NCAA Super Region I Championships in Erie, the weekend of Feb. 22-23.

Probables at Shippensburg:
125: Wilde or Renne
133: L. Miller
141: Petril
149: Jones
157: Haegele
165: Rogovich
174: Warner
184: Reimel
