SINKING SPRING, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's bowling team, seeded 11th in Sunday's best-of-7 Baker format bracket, won all three of its matches to move up to ninth in the final standings of the Golden Bear Classic at Berks Lanes.
The Golden Bears opened with a 4-2 victory over LIU Post and defeated Wilmington (Del.) by the same score. In the ninth-place match, KU produced four 200+ games to down Roberts Wesleyan, 4-1.
Kutztown and LIU Post traded wins in the first round through four games, before the hosts finally put the Pioneers away with 198-136 and 192-171 victories in games five and six.
The Maroon and Gold (60-51) started off round two with their first 200 game of the day, staving off Wilmington 209-192. KU actually took a 3-0 lead before the Wildcats responded with two straight 200+ games to stay alive, but the Bears advanced with a 227-198 win in game six.
Roberts Wesleyan was no match for Kutztown in the positioning round.
Joseph Ambrose's squad rolled a 200 in game one, a 231 in game two, a 202 in game four and a 209 in game five to swiftly claim ninth place.
Leading the way for the Golden Bears on Sunday was freshman
Lindsey Gotwalt (Hanover, Md./Meade) with a 21.90 frame average in 32 frames. Classmate
Madison Burkert (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) was a hair over 19 pins per frame at 19.06 in 15.
Angela Kozma (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) averaged 18.90 and
Keanna Delp (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) 18.09, both in 32 frames.
Kutztown will have an off weekend before competing at the Molloy-hosted Lions Baker Challenge on Long Island Feb. 23-24.
