KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore
Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) was forced to throw up a highly-contested shot with just a few ticks on the clock remaining, but drained it to force overtime. Freshman
Wesley Butler (Reading, Pa./Reading) netted a career-high 26 points to lead the Kutztown University men's basketball team to a 92-82 overtime victory over Gannon University Saturday evening in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) home-opener at Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears (4-4 overall, 2-1 PSAC) won their second game in-a-row and second conference game in their first three contests.
Trailing 77-74 with just 0:19 remaining, head coach
Bernie Driscoll called a timeout and then subbed in Generett. Smart move. The duo of Butler and Generett connected on a game-saving and game-tying three-pointer when Butler found Generett, who hoisted up a shot over a taller defender and drained it to tie the score at 77-all with 1.6 seconds left.
Kutztown then scored the first five points of the overtime period, all from Butler, and outscored the Golden Knights (2-4, 1-2) 15-5 in the extra period to take the game.
Butler had three rebounds and three assists to go along with his game-high 26 points.
Tarojae Brake (Coatesville, Pa./Octorara) tallied 19 points as he was blanketed almost the entirety of the game by Gannon's leading scorer and defense Frank Webb Jr. Both Generett and senior
Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) recorded 14 points to round out a group of four Golden Bears in double-figures. Townsend also grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds to tally his third double-double this season and second in-a-row.
In a back-and-forth first half, the Maroon and Gold fell behind 34-26 with 2:06 to go, KU scored six straight and found itself trailing by just two (34-32) at halftime. In the second half there were 10 ties and eight lead changes, with the most important number being the last tie as KU needed to hit a long range shot to stay alive, and Generett answered.
Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca), in his first game back after missing the last two, had six points.
Michael Smith III (Chester, Pa./Chester) contributed four points and three rebounds.
Kutztown has a week off before its next game, when it travels to take on Wilmington (Del.) next Saturday, Dec. 14, at 3 p.m.
