Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | by C.J. Hemerly, Assistant Sports Information Director

Edinboro sinks two late free-throws to down men’s hoops Saturday night

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Daylon Harris of Edinboro University hit two free-throws with less than a second left on the clock to secure an 88-86 overtime victory over the Kutztown University men's basketball team Saturday night at Keystone Arena in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game.

Trailing 77-73 with just 0:31 to go and in their final real offensive possession, the Golden Bears (5-6 overall, 3-2 PSAC) executed to perfection as Tarojae Brake (Coatesville, Pa./Octorara) hit a three-pointer from a couple steps behind the line, and did it while being fouled. He drained the ensuing free-throw to complete an improbable four-point play with 0:19 left. KU remarkably even had a chance at winning the game as Wesley Butler (Reading, Pa./Reading) stole the ball from a Fighting Scots' (5-4, 2-3) player and got a clean look from long range just before the clock hit zero, but his effort would not fall, and the game went to overtime.

In the extra period, there were three lead changes and two ties through 4:36. After Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) sank a free-throw to finish off a three-point play that tied the score 86-86 with 0:14 remaining, Edinboro heaved up a contested shot from the corner that rimmed out, but was collected by Harris, and his put-back attempt was whistled for a foul with less than a second on the clock. He hit both from the charity stripe to give the Fighting Scots the victory.

Brake and Butler each tallied 21 points to lead the Maroon and Gold. Butler added three rebounds and tied a season-high with three steals, while Brake had two rebounds and two assists. The duo played 38 and 37 minutes respectively.

Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) also reached double-figures in scoring, finishing with his fourth double-double of the year, with 13 points and 10 boards.

Kutztown struggled from the floor in the first half, shooting 34.4-percent (11-for-32) from the floor, and trailed 38-32 at halftime. But KU turned it up not only offensively but defensively in the second half. KU was 17-of-29 (58-6 percent) in the second stanza to get themselves back into the game and eventually into various leads.

Generett recorded eight points and two assists Ryan 'Boz' Bernstein (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep) tallied seven points, three rebounds, two steals and a season-best eight assists in a season-high 36 minutes of action. Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca) and Sean Griffin (Abington, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) each had four points, with Griffin tying his season-best grabbing five rebounds. Michael Smith III (Chester, Pa./Chester) and Da'Quan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) both finished with three points and Austin Laughlin (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) netted two points for KU. Granberry also contributed five boards.

Kutztown will next hit the court in the new calendar year when it hosts East Stroudsburg on Friday, Jan. 3, at 7:30 p.m., from Keystone Arena.
