LOCKPORT, N.Y. -- Madison Burkert (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg),
Keanna Delp (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg),
Kelly Normandin (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central) and
Renee Riffey (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) all bowled 200+ games, Saturday, as the Kutztown University women's bowling team went a perfect 5-0 in traditional match play to grab the lead at the Redhawks Fall Rally hosted by Roberts Wesleyan at Brad Angelo Lanes.
Normandin, inserted into the Golden Bears' lineup during its third match of the day, came up huge with a team-high 258 and Delp rolled her high game of the day, a 213, to help KU finish the day with a 982-907 win over Medaille. Kutztown's (12-3) highest score in five matches was just enough to push them in front of the Mavericks for first on total pinfall, 4,351-4,350. The Golden Bears are ranked seventh in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Division II/III Preseason Top 15 and Medaille is 12th.
Kutztown started the day with an 882-728 win over D'Youville behind Burkert's 203. Delp rolled a 179 and the Golden Bears' lineup was filled out by a trio of games in the 160s from
Dana Henry (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) (169),
Alexis Case (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) (166) and Riffey (165).
Delp and Riffey each matched their opening game scores with 179 and 165, respectively, as KU edged Penn State Behrend 749-745. Though the scores weren't where first-year head coach
Angela Reynolds would have preferred, the Maroon and Gold escaped with a win.
A few tweaks to the lineup got the Bears back on track in an 868-709 win over Villa Maria in the middle match. Riffey stepped up with her best game, throwing a 219, while Delp recorded a 170, Burkert a 169 and Normandin a 161.
Kutztown led into the Medaille match with an 870-763 triumph over Walsh. Burkert was the high scorer at 195, followed by Riffey (169), Delp (168) and
Ashley Fister (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) (166).
Normandin averaged 197 across three matches, while Delp totaled a 181.8 in playing all five. Burkert and Riffey also appeared in every match, averaging 177.
Kutztown faces Roberts Wesleyan, Mercyhurst, Hilbert and Daemen in Baker format matches on Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. The fifth and final match tomorrow will be based on team standings following the ninth round of the tournament. The Golden Bears and Medaille are more than 150 pins up on third-place Roberts Wesleyan (4,193). Daemen (4,178) and Villa Maria (3,927) round out the top five.
