Slow fourth quarter dooms Kutztown in loss at Pitt-Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team had a lead after three quarters of play, albeit a slim one, but a fourth quarter run by Pitt-Johnstown gave the Panthers a 79-64 win Sunday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) cross-divisional game.

The Golden Bears (2-4 overall, 1-1 PSAC) had their two-game win streak snapped by the Panthers (6-1, 2-0), who went on a 21-3 spurt over a 4:45 period to end the game.

Junior Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) tallied a season-high 24 points and added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) recorded 12 points, six rebounds, four steals and a career-high three blocks. Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) finished with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals and five blocks, the second straight game the freshman had five denials.

Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) contributed eight points, three rebounds and two steals, and both Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) finished with five points. Lapkiewicz added a season-high nine rebounds.

The Maroon and Gold saw themselves trailing by two points, 36-34, at halftime, but outscored Pitt-Johnstown 20-16 in the third quarter to go ahead. But the Panthers returned the favor and scored 21 of the final 24 points of the game to take the win.

Kutztown will finally make its long awaited home debut of 2019 when it hosts Penn State Lehigh Valley on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 1 p.m. It will begin a stretch of seven straight home games for KU that expands into the new calendar year.
