Butler, Granberry lead Golden Bears in loss at No. 23 Jefferson

PHILADELPHIA -- Wesley Butler (Reading, Pa./Reading) had 19 points and Da'Quan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) a career-high 18 to lead four Golden Bears in double figures, but No. 23 Jefferson connected on 14 3-pointers and more than 62% of its shots to down Kutztown, 97-79, Tuesday night at the Gallagher Center.

The victory was No. 1,100 in the illustrious career of 53rd-year Rams' head coach Herb Magee, who joined Duke's Mike Krzyzewski as the only college basketball coaches to reach the milestone.

Jefferson 1,000-point scorer Josh Bradanese and his teammates put on an offensive exhibit in the first half, making 17-of-27 shots (63%), while shooting an even better 75% from outside (12-of-16). The Rams were also 10-of-12 at the foul line in taking a 56-36 lead to the locker room. It was the most points scored against the Golden Bears (1-3) in a half this season.

Bradanese had 21 of his 25 points on 8-of-9 shooting (5-of-5 3FG), while Deondre Bourne and Kylan Guerra added 19 and 14, respectively. All three players would top 20 points on the night.

Granberry came off the bench to spark KU with a team-leading 11 points in the first half. Butler had eight and Akello Mosby (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver) six as the Golden Bears shot a respectable 42.4% and canned six treys --it just wasn't enough to match the Rams.

Ryan 'Boz' Bernstein (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep) scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half on a perfect 4-of-4 effort from the floor and Butler tallied 11 more for the Maroon and Gold, which cut what was once a 28-point Jefferson (4-0) to 17, 73-56, on a Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) jumper from the right elbow with 9:18 to play.

Kutztown would not trim the hosts advantage any further. Jefferson's shooting remained consistent throughout the 40 minutes of play, with the Rams making 15 of their 24 attempts in the second for 62.5% and finishing the night 32-of-51 (62.7%).

Bourne totaled a game-high 27 for the Rams, followed by Bradanese, Guerra (21) and DeVaughn Mallory (10). Guerra also had a game-high nine assists.

Granberry (18) and Mosby (10) accounted for more than half of Kutztown's 48 points off the bench. Mosby added eight boards and Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) six as the Golden Bears edged the Rams, 32-28, on the glass.

Butler shot 8-of-16 overall and 3-of-4 from deep to lead KU in scoring. The freshman from Reading has reached double figures in all four games and is scoring at an 18.0-point per game rate thus far.

The Golden Bears open PSAC play this weekend when they travel west to face Clarion at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Pitt-Johnstown at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
