SINKING SPRING, Pa. -- Kutztown women's bowling wrapped up a successful opening weekend with four wins, including two over nationally-ranked opponents, and recorded a fifth-place finish in traditional format play at the Bud Whitman Memorial on Sunday at Berks Lanes.
With the weekend split into two separate tournaments, the Golden Bears tallied seven wins in 10 matches between Saturday's Baker format and Sunday's traditional format.
The day started in impressive fashion as the Golden Bears snapped a nine-match skid against No. 22 Adelphi with a big 981-834 victory.
Keanna Delp (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) led the way with a 267, while
Ella Luzzi (Spring Lake, N.J./Manasquan) rolled a 197,
Ashley Fister (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) a 185 and
Madison Burkert (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) a 175.
Kutztown's victory over the expected East Coast Conference contender was its first since Nov. 3, 2017. The Panthers won all six meetings last season and had won 15 of the last 16 meetings dating back to the 2015-16 season.
The Golden Bears (7-3) took that momentum forward and came through with big shots late to defeat Bloomfield, 889-862, and Wilmington (Del.), 877-831.
Laura Hartley (Mt Pleasant Mills, Pa./Midd-West) paced the Maroon and Gold against Bloomfield with a 210 and Luzzi posted a 181.
Delp was back in the 200s against Wilmington, striking out in the 10th frame to finish with a team-high 208. Burkert followed with a 176 and the entire starting lineup surpassed 160.
Great games from
Renee Riffey (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) and Delp weren't enough to fend off Molloy in KU's fourth match of the day. Despite knocking down 938 pins, Molloy was 15 better in a 953-938 final. It was the highest score by a Golden Bear opponent during Sunday's matches. Riffey, starting her first match of the tournament, cranked out a 225. Delp was close behind with a 209.
Another well-rounded performance to close out the tournament elevated KU above newly-formed and 24th-ranked Long Island, 954-896. LIU Brooklyn and LIU Post converged universities and teams to create Long Island University in the offseason. Riffey's 212 topped KU's lineup, but
Alexis Case (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) (202), Delp (194), Hartley (179) and Burkert (167) did their parts, too.
Kutztown claimed the final spot in the top five of the tournament with a total score of 4,639 (185.6 average). No. 20 Duquesne held off No. 21 Mount St. Mary's by 15 pins, 5,049-5,034, to win the tournament. No. 22 Adelphi (4,941) and Wilmington (4,717) were third and fourth.
The Golden Bears will return to the lanes in two weeks at the USBC sanctioned Stevens Invitational in Elmwood Park, New Jersey.
