LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --
Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and
Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) teamed up for 14 first-quarter points and the Kutztown University women's basketball team led from start-to-finish in a 66-55 PSAC East victory at Lock Haven Wednesday night.
Derr hit back-to-back 3-pointers before Lapkiewicz scored five straight points, as the Golden Bears got off to a flying start. They led 11-1 just over five minutes into the first quarter and 22-7 by the end of the period.
Lock Haven didn't get back within single digits until late in the third quarter and never drew closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Kutztown (11-9, 9-4 PSAC) played swarming defense, particularly in the first quarter, coming up with five of its 13 steals and pressuring the Bald Eagles into nine turnovers. Lock Haven (10-10, 5-8) committed 24 giveaways in the game, tied for the third most by a KU opponent this season. Derr and
Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) were at the forefront of the Golden Bears' defensive efforts, sharing a game-high with four steals each.
Derr continued to light it up from distance two days after earning PSAC East Athlete of the Week honors for the first time in her career. After draining a program single-game record nine 3-pointers in last Saturday's win over East Stroudsburg, the Lititz native was good on 5-of-9 attempts on Wednesday. Derr had a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds.
Lapkiewicz chipped in 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting and was 5-of-7 at the foul line.
Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) led KU off the bench with 11 points.
Outside of the Bears' dominant first quarter, the two teams were nearly even over the final 30 minutes. Lock Haven actually shot a bit better from the floor than Kutztown, but was just 1-of-6 on 3-point attempts, while the guests made seven threes.
Ahnera Parker was the only Bald Eagle in double figures with 14 points. Tiana Garvin (nine) and Kendra Stanford (eight) combined for 17 points, as 24 of LHU's 55 points came from its reserves.
Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) totaled seven points,
Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) had six and
Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) five for Kutztown, which won for the eighth time in its last 10 games to remain within a game of division-leading Bloomsburg.
The Maroon and Gold will play their next two games at Keystone Arena, starting with Saturday's match-up against Shippensburg. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
