LIMERICK, Pa. – The 25th-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team challenged itself on the opening day of its home tournament yesterday, and it one-upped itself a day later as KU faced four nationally-ranked opponents inside the top-12 and came away with its sixth victory over a ranked team this season to highlight day two of the Kutztown Invitational Saturday at Limerick Bowl.
The Golden Bears (35-38 overall) recorded their sixth nationally-ranked win when they defeated No. 12 Wisconsin-Whitewater for their second win of the day. It was the highest-rated win since Kutztown beat seventh-ranked University of Maryland Eastern Shore back on Nov. 26. KU also got the better of then-No. 12 Sacred Heart on the same day and had two top-10 victories at the end of Oct.
Kutztown began the day with a close loss to No. 4 Arkansas State, falling just short 951-929. But the Maroon and Gold bounced back in their next two matches with two consecutive wins over Howard and then Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The rigorous gauntlet of competition may have gotten to KU as it dropped its final two matches of the day, albeit to two top-10 teams in sixth-ranked Tulane and No. 10 Stephen F. Austin.
Junior
Renee Riffey (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) had three 200-plus games in the final three matches with a team-high of 234 against Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Alexis Case (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township),
Angela Kozma (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) and
Keanna Delp (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) also tallied 200 games rolling a 202, 200 and 203 respectively.
Action on the final day, Sunday, begins at 8:25 a.m.
