Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Derr, Golden Bears roll to 66-55 road win at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Golden Bears head coach Janet Malouf couldn't have asked for a better road start.

The Kutztown University women's basketball team opened Saturday's PSAC East game at Shippensburg on a 10-0 run and never ceded the lead in a 66-55 victory.

Sophomore Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) supplied her third double-double of the season with game-highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds. Senior backcourt mate Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) added 15 points, and the Golden Bears' defense limited the Raiders to 30% shooting overall.

Derr, Thames, Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) and Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) each scored as the visitors ran off the game's first 10 points. Shippensburg (6-10, 3-6 PSAC) went 4:35 without a point before Ariel Jones converted a traditional 3-point play.

Though KU led by as many as 12 points in the first quarter, Ship started to gain momentum towards the end of the period.

Four different players scored for the Raiders and the Golden Bears (8-8, 6-3) committed turnovers on five straight possessions, allowing the home side to draw within 17-12 at the conclusion of the first.

Shippensburg got within 19-18 on a Kryshell Gordy layup at the 6:18 mark of the second, but Derr drilled a three and Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) drove for a layup to spearhead Kutztown's 10-2 run to finish the half.

The Raiders threatened again in the third, twice making it a single possession game, but the Maroon and Gold finally found separation in the fourth.

Derr and Lapkiewicz each connected from downtown and KU started the fourth on another 10-2 run to lead 51-38 with 5:54 to play. The Golden Bears maintained a double-digit lead most of the way from there.

Derr, who reached the 20-point mark for the seventh time this season, was responsible for both of Kutztown's 3-pointers on the afternoon. She's made at least one trey in all 16 games this season and 38 straight going back to her freshman season.

Thames was 5-of-9 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the foul line. The Golden Bears were nearly perfect at the line, going 12-of-13 overall (92.3%).

Lapkiewicz and Zerman both had seven points, while Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) had six, four boards and three steals.

Ariel Jones played all 40 minutes in leading the Raiders with 18 points, including the 1,000th of her career. Margarita Kilpatrick and Lauren Pettis each finished with nine points.

Free throw shooting kept Shippensburg in contention most of the afternoon. The Raiders were 22-of-31 from the line, but just 15-of-50 (30.0%) from the floor.

Kutztown will try for its fifth PSAC win in its last six league games when it travels to Mansfield for a 5:30 p.m. tip on Wednesday.
