HAMPTON, Va. -- Three pins and two technical falls contributed to nine unanswered victories for the 15th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team, which opened the Virginia Duals with a 42-6 win over Averett Friday morning at the Hampton Coliseum.
The Cougars, members of NCAA Division III, got off to a fast start with a pin from Sam Braswell at 125 lbs., but it was all Kutztown from there.
Austin Scrivani (Layton, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) (149),
Jeff Reimel (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) (184) and
Andrew Dunn Jr. (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (Virginia Tech)) (285) registered pins, while
Chad Haegele (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) (157) and
T.C. Warner (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Bloomsburg)) (174) won by tech. fall as the Golden Bears (3-1) scored 42 consecutive points.
KU effectively erased Averett's (5-6) early edge with a 10-4 decision from 133-pounder
Lucas Miller (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown Area) and 6-2 win by
Anthony Petril (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby (Ursinus)) over Brandon Woody at 141.
Scrivani needed just 36 seconds to stick Caleb Harmon, before Haegele used three takedowns and six back points on his way to a 15-0 tech. fall in 5:53 against Josh Linkous for a 17-6 Golden Bear advantage. Kutztown collected bonus points in five of the final six bouts.
Following
Mikey O'Brien's (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) 12-5 decision at 165, Warner dominated Craig Lewis with a 16-0 tech. fall in his season debut. The senior from Mechanicsburg didn't even need a full period to earn his team five points. Warner got a takedown 14 seconds in and added three 4-point nearfalls and a 2-point nearfall to end it at 1:50.
Reimel, Division II's top-ranked grappler at 184, backed up that ranking with a 2:37 pin of Demontay Wimbush.
James Meyer (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) secured his first tech. fall of the season, 15-0 (5:10), against the Cougars' John Bishop at 197, and seventh-ranked
Andrew Dunn Jr. (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (Virginia Tech)) pinned Tavon Blowe in 3:21 to close the match.
The Golden Bears, who are the top-seed in the American College Division bracket of this weekend's Virginia Duals, will face Apprentice School in the semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. A victory over the Builders would send KU to the championship match at 8:30 p.m.
