KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team will honor its three seniors,
Madison Carlucci (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley),
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) and
Olivia Haas (Denver, Pa./Cocalico (Edinboro)), on Saturday afternoon, April 21, before its final regular-season home game of the 2018 season against the Seton Hill University Griffins. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Keystone Field.
This trio will be looking for revenge against SHU as KU has lost its previous four meetings with the Griffins and has not defeated Seton Hill since the Kutztown program was re-established in 2008.
Carlucci and Gabriele have both been staples in the Maroon and Gold offensive rotation since stepping on campus as freshman, combining for 230 career goals. Carlucci has totaled 15 or more goals in each of the last three seasons, scoring a career-high 20 in 2017.
Gabriele has been arguably the best player in the history of the Kutztown University women's lacrosse program, totaling 30-plus goals in each of her four seasons as a Golden Bear. The Felton native holds the KU career records for total points (227), goals (170) and assists (57) and has been named an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) performer in each of the last two seasons.
Haas has been an integral part of the program as a team-player and leader over the past two seasons since transferring to KU from fellow PSAC-member Edinboro after the 2016 season. The Cocalico-prep has played in six career games and scored her first career goal at Post University on March 12, 2018.
Previewing the matchup between Kutztown (3-7, 6-9 PSAC) and Seton Hill, the Griffins (2-7, 3-10) have struggled this season, sitting just above last-place Edinboro in the current conference standings. However, SHU did snap a six-game losing streak its last time out, defeating Gannon at home 16-11 on April 17. Despite this offensive outburst, the Griffins have been a low-scoring team all season, averaging just more than nine goals per game, second-to-last in the PSAC. Mackenzie Kilduff is the leading scorer for SHU, having totaled 21 goals and 10 assists. Right behind Kilduff, Katelyn Cressman has been Seton Hill's second offensive option, posting 15 goals and 13 assists.
KU enters this contest looking to snap a four-game losing streak of its own, having suffered consecutive losses to Slippery Rock, East Stroudsburg, Lock Haven and, most recently, Millersville. With their playoff hopes now dashed, the Golden Bears now look to create some momentum going into the off-season with their final two games against SHU and Mercyhurst. Gabriele and
Makayla Bowman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) are tied for the team-lead with 35 goals with Gabriele leading the Golden Bears with 20 assists for a team-high 55 points. Between the pipes, freshman
Haley Kline (Reading, Pa./Wilson West Lawn) has been solid in her first season in Maroon and Gold, totaling 145 saves, six shy of eighth-most in KU single-season history.
The Maroon and Gold hold higher per-game averages than Seton Hill in nearly every statistical category, averaging more groundballs, less turnovers and more shots-on-goal/goals per game. Based on this, Kutztown will have the opportunity, in matching up with SHU, to get a victory in its final home game of the 2018 campaign as well as to leave its trio of seniors with a positive final memory at Keystone Field.
