Championship Central | Day 2 Brackets
PORT JEFFERSON, N.Y. – The 21st-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team was eliminated from the East Coast Conference (ECC) Championships on Saturday afternoon, going 1-2 in today's double elimination bracket-style rounds, defeating LIU Post and falling to No. 23 Lincoln Memorial University and Molloy University.
The Golden Bears exit from the conference tournament means the conclusion of an outstanding 2017-18 campaign in which they finished with a 72-45 overall record. The .615 winning percentage is the best for the program since 2013. Kutztown also had two all-conference performers recognized this past week in
Angela Kozma (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) and
Jenn Fitts (Birdsboro, Pa./Twin Valley), whom were both selected to the ECC's All-Conference Second Team.
After winning of four of five matches yesterday in pool play, KU was slotted into the nine-seed for the bracket rounds. It then defeated eight-seed Wilmington University last night in a tightly contested 4-3 victory to advance to a second round matchup with LMU to begin the second day of competition.
Kutztown got things off to a good start against Lincoln Memorial, winning a low-scoring first game 189-149 to put itself ahead. LMU however posted scores of 205-222-244-193 in the final five games to defeat the Maroon and Gold, who didn't reach the 200-pin threshold in any of those four, 4-1.
KU shook off the loss to LMU quickly in their next matchup with LIU Post, of which was now a must-win, having already lost once on the day. With their backs against the wall, the Golden Bears exploded for a series of 202-170-182-245 to sweep LIU Post 4-0 and keep themselves alive.
The momentum continued to roll for the Kutztown into its next match as it won with scores of 200 and 175 in the opening two games to take a 2-0 lead over Malloy. The Maroon and Gold ran out of steam, however, at this point, dropping four straight games to Malloy, suffering a 4-2 defeat.
