PORT JEFFERSON, N.Y. – A timely Game-7 victory capped a successful opening day for the 21st-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team Friday at the 2018 East Coast Conference (ECC) Championships at the Port Jeff Bowl.
The Golden Bears won 4-of-5 matches through pool-play on Friday. KU opened the day with wins over Chestnut Hill (859-831) and Molloy (944-867), but followed with its only setback of the day – a 990-825 loss to Franklin Pierce.
Kutztown responded though with wins over Saint Thomas Aquinas (695-500) and Wilmington (912-823) to close out pool play. KU stood in ninth place with a pinfall of 4,235 (169.4), setting it up against Wilmington for the second time of the day, in the first round of double-elimination bracket-play.
KU jumped out to a 3-1 lead, including a match-best 203 in the first match. KU staved off a charging Wildcats, who won games five and six to force a game-seven, but KU pulled off a narrow 163-160 victory to continue its way through the winner's bracket.
Awaiting No. 21 Kutztown will be No. 23 Lincoln Memorial, who went 5-0 on the day.
