Muro Scores on Senior Day as No. 6 KU Downs Mercyhurst 4-0

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Rita Muro (Barcelona, Spain/ES International School) scored a second-half goal in her final regular season game at Andre Reed Stadium to highlight the sixth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team's 4-0 defeat of Mercyhurst University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Saturday afternoon.

KU (14-4, 7-3 PSAC) has now won its most games both overall and in PSAC play since the 2007 campaign, the last time that the Golden Bears appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Kutztown, which has qualified for the PSAC playoffs beginning Nov. 13, extends its current win streak to five in-a-row with the victory over the Lakers. The Maroon and Gold have now held separate win streaks of eight games and the current five-gamer this season.

The offensive firepower of the Golden Bears was on full display on Senior Day as KU scored its first three goals before the halftime whistle. The terrific trio of Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin), Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) combined on all three goals in the opening 35 minutes with Dusman assisting on Wozniak and Fuhrman's tallies and Wozniak picking up the helper on Dusman's goal.

Muro had several chances in front throughout the game, but finally found the back of the net with less than five minutes to go to put a bow on the KU victory. The goal for Muro was her first of the season and the second of her career. Muro and her 2018 senior classmates Lauren Latchford (Newport, Pa./Newport), Laura Durdon (Greene, N.Y./Greene) and McKenna Conselyea (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) all started and played significant minutes in the game as Kutztown didn't miss a beat with some of its senior reserves in the lineup.

Wozniak totaled a team-high eight shots, five of which were on target, and recorded one goal and two assists. Wozniak's 21 goals on the season rank tied-third all-time at KU, one shy of Anna Behm's 22 goals in 2015. Dusman also tallied a goal and two assists, moving her season total to 12, tied-third all-time. The backline of the Maroon and Gold defense held Mercyhurst to just three shots compared to KU's 24, notching a shutout in its second-straight contest.

All three KU goalkeepers, Kerri Hanshaw (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) and Grace Dow (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) saw action in the game with the starter Hanshaw picking up the win to move record to 5-0. Head coach Marci Scheuing was also able to get every healthy player on the Kutztown roster in the game.

With many of the other PSAC teams having regular season games to play, Kutztown awaits its seed and matchup in the PSAC Tournament, which will be set on the evening on Saturday, Nov. 10.
