MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The seventh-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team was back in the big dance, but unfortunately suffered a setback, as eighth-ranked Millersville University scored two goals and took down KU 2-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinal Round.
The Golden Bears finished up their season at 14-5 overall, the most wins by a program since 2007. They also played in their first PSAC Tournament since 2015.
But playing on the road brings challenges, and Kutztown faced its share with the Marauders on their home turf under the lights.
Millersville got into the score column in the sixth minute after consecutive penalty corners. Junior goalie
Kerri Hanshaw (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) came up with a nice save off the initial corner, but the Marauders were awarded another a few seconds after the save. They capitalized off that.
That one-goal deficit stood into the intermission.
Kutztown came out fired up in the second half and recorded two straight shots off two consecutive penalty corners, but were unable to find the back of the cage.
Then just like it did in the first half, Millersville scored a goal in the first six minutes of the second, and then was able to hold off a late flurry by KU, which featured five consecutive penalty corners in a span over a little over two minutes.
KU held an 11-3 advantage in corners and 9-4 edge in shots.
Kutztown will graduate four seniors;
McKenna Conselyea (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley),
Laura Durdon (Greene, N.Y./Greene),
Lauren Latchford (Newport, Pa./Newport) and
Rita Muro (Barcelona, Spain/ES International School). It will return a majority of its lineup for the 2019 campaign with a ton of momentum on its side.
