Haegele Wins at 157 for KU Wrestling at ESU Open

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University wrestling team had 10 competitors finish with .500-or better records highlighted by Chad Haegele's (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) 4-0 sweep at 157 lbs. in its performance at the East Stroudsburg University Open on Saturday.

Haegele battled through the 157 lbs. bracket, showing his technical ability in winning all four matches by decision. The Warrington-native won his bouts over contenders from Old Dominion and Rider in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Haegele then squared off with ODU's Cole Smith in the championship round, dispatching Smith by decision 6-3.

Andrew Dunn Jr. (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (Virginia Tech)) also delivered an outstanding day for the Golden Bears, winning his first three matches, two of which came by fall. Unfortunately, his day was cut short due to a medical forfeit in the championship semifinals.

285 lbs. proved to be the strongest class of the day for KU as fellow-weight class member John Barlow (Upper Chichester, Pa./Chichester) notched four victories, posting a 4-2 record. Dunn finished fourth and Barlow finished sixth in the heavyweight division.

Anthony Petril (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby (Ursinus)), Michael Cusick (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette), Mitchell Camp (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) and Mikey O'Brien (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) all recorded championship round victories with each ending their day with three wins a piece.

Joe Renne (Great Meadows, N.J./Hackettstown), Lucas Miller (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown Area), Robbie Hazard (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) and Reed Custer (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) rounded out the group of KU wrestlers with even or above average records on the day.

KU opens its dual season in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at home for Military Appreciation Day as it welcomes Pitt-Johnstown to the friendly confines.
