READING, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's bowling team took down Saint Francis Brooklyn in seven games in the first of three matches for the Golden Bears Sunday morning. KU suffered a seven-game setback to 14th-ranked LIU Brooklyn before falling 4-2 to 24th-ranked Monmouth as Kutztown finished in 18th place to wrap up the 10th Annual KU Invitational from Hiester Lanes.
Kutztown (37-29) took a 2-0 lead in its opening match against Saint Francis Brooklyn, starting with a match-high 235 in the first game. Saint Francis came back to tie the match at 2-2, but KU won games five and seven to open Sunday with a win.
LIU Brooklyn won the first game by one pin, 215-214, but Kutztown answered by winning the next two games – including a day-high 276 in game three. LIU Brooklyn regained a 3-2 lead with two-straight wins, Kutztown forced a game seven with a one-pin, 181-180 win in game six, but LIU Brooklyn won game seven, 187-166, to put KU in the 17th-place match.
Kutztown faced No. 24 Monmouth for the second time this weekend on Sunday. KU won the first two games, but Monmouth turned up the heat with four-in-a-row in its 4-2 win over Kutztown.
McKendree, the defending national champion, defeated Vanderbilt to win the KU Invite. Sam Houston State finished third, Tulane was fourth and Delaware State finished in fifth. McKendree's Breanna Clemmer averaged a 231.6 to earn Tournament MVP honors.
The Golden Bears return to action next weekend, Jan. 26-28, at the Red Flash Invitational, hosted by Saint Francis (PA) in Altoona, Pa.
