KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University men's basketball senior guard
Rafiq Marshall (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz (Cheyney)) watched his backcourt-mate
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) hit a game-winning shot at the buzzer in its win over Edinboro over the weekend. So Marshall wanted to keep pace.
Â
Mission accomplished.
Â
Marshall drove the length of the court with just 0:05 left on the clock,
and his running jumper banked off the backboard and dropped as the buzzer sounded, giving Kutztown a 92-90 victory against Mansfield University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game Wednesday night at Keystone Arena.
Â
After the Mountaineers tied the game at 90 on a layup by Malik Carter with a little over 0:05 to go,
Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) quickly inbounded the ball and found Marshall. The 6'0" guard raced down the left side of the court and floated a shot that banked off the glass, bounced on the front of the rim, and then smoothly dropped in as the horn sounded and his teammates rushed the floor.
Â
It was the second straight game-winning shot for the Golden Bears (11-2 overall, 7-2 PSAC). Ridgeway found himself as the hero in a 91-89 win at Edinboro University last Saturday, Jan. 6.
Â
The shot literally came at just the right time.
Â
Kutztown held a nine-point advantage, 90-81 with 2:08 remaining, but Mansfield (4-9, 3-7) scored the next nine points in a span of 2:02 to tie it up. With all of the momentum on the Mounties side, KU did not want to be forced into overtime.
Â
The win is the third-in-a-row for the Maroon and Gold, who sit in a tie in second place in the PSAC with East Stroudsburg University (10-3, 7-2). They are also 8-0 at home this season, and have won 35 of their last 37 games at Keystone Arena.
Â
A big reason for another home victory Wednesday night was because of Kutztown's starting five. The five players recorded 84 of the 92 points, which is 91 percent of the scoring. It was the second time this season that all five starters scored in double-figures.
Â
Marshall led the way with a team-high and season-high 22 points, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. He also had four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Â
Ridgeway had his second consecutive double-double, recording 15 points and 13 assists. Junior
Dan Cuevas (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) tallied 18 points and four rebounds, and redshirt-junior
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) had 15 points and five rebounds. Lee, who came in shooting 55.7 percent from beyond the arc, went 3-for-6 (50.0%) from 3-point range.
Â
The fifth starter, redshirt-freshman
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy), had a career-high 14 points and added six rebounds and two assists. He went 4-of-8 from the floor.
Â
Mansfield was able to stay in the game because of its efficiency from the field. The Mounties shot 60.7 percent from inside the arc, and 50 percent from three.
Â
Wagner contributed five points, two rebounds and one block.
Â
Kutztown next travels to Millersville University on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m.
