MANHEIM, Pa. – The Kutztown University field hockey team broke a tie with two goals in the final five minutes to remain undefeated and defeat Queens University 3-1 on Sunday at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim – the home of USA Field Hockey.
Sunday marked the first-ever NCAA Division II field hockey game to be played on the home turf of USA Field Hockey.
The Golden Bears improve to 4-0 for the second-straight season. They controlled possession with a 31-8 advantage in shots and 14-5 in corners, but found themselves in a tie game late in regulation.
Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) scored late in the first-half for a 1-0 lead, but Queens answered just more than two minutes into the second half. Korey Fine scored off a rebound in front of the cage to tie the game at 1-1 – KU's first surrendered goal of the season.
The game remained tied into the final five minutes of regulation. Continuing to apply pressure, KU rang a shot off the post in the 67th minute, only to be followed by rebound goal by
Trinity Ponton (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) for the game-winning goal.
30 seconds later,
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) made up for her near-miss off the post by scoring on her very next shot attempt in the 68th minute to secure the Golden Bear victory.
Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) made four saves in goal and moves to 4-0 on the season.
Kutztown looks ahead to a non-conference matchup at nationally-ranked East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday, Sept. 12, beginning at 4 p.m.
