SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's tennis team suffered a loss at the hands of Shippensburg, 6-3, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup on Sunday afternoon.
Things looked bright to start off the day, as
Alyssa Konas (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) paired for a commanding 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Shippensburg closed out the final two doubles matches to bring the score to 2-1 entering singles play though, despite
Alicia Pursell (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg Area) and
Shadimon Navarro (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) battling tough in a 5-8 defeat at the second flight.
Capoferri sparked a potential comeback in singles play by sweeping her No. 2 opponent, but Shippensburg won the next four matches to clinch the victory. Notably,
Yasmeen Malik (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and
Kady Wuagon (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) each won seven games in their respective defeats.
The match ended with a back-and-forth No. 1 singles affair, with Konas prevailing in the third set 6-3 to end KU's day on a positive note.
Kutztown will have a few day's rest until hitting the road to West Virginia to faceoff against Shepherd University in a non-conference battle on Thursday, April 6. The match is set to start at 3 p.m.
