KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's bowling team heads to Ridge, N.H. to compete in the second year of the East Coast Conference (ECC) Championships, looking for a conference title in its final event of the season, beginning this Friday, March 24.
The three-day event, hosted by Franklin Pierce, will take place at Yankee Lanes and conclude on Sunday, March 26.
Kutztown (52-59) looks to return for another strong showing at the ECC Championships on the heels of an impressive season, led by the strong performances of its young team members. Junior
Jenn Fitts (Birdsboro, Pa./Twin Valley) has had the most notable showing of the season, starting in all 114 matches with a team-leading 18.28 frame average, 187.1 traditional average and 38.1 strike percentage.
Fitts has been a strong performer throughout the entire 2016-17 season, earning ECC Bowler of the Week distinction three times, while filling 79.8 percent of her frames.
Freshman
Angela Kozma (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) also leads the Golden Bears with a notable performance in her debut season, earning honors as the ECC Rookie of the Week on two separate occasions. Her impressive first year earned her a place in the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Individual Sectionals on March 10, where he came in second on the team and finished in 73rd place.
Kozma heads into the event second to Fitts with a remarkable 171.6 traditional average and 17.8 a frame, along with posting a 64.9 spare percentage.
Felicia Trievel (Reading, Pa./Wilson) caps the leaders for the Maroon and Gold with a 17.28 frame average in her 110 appearances on the season, along with a 170.9 total average, third on the team. Trievel led Kutztown in her most notable performance of the season, when she posted the best two games of the day at the KU Invitational on Jan. 21, bowling a day-high 236 with a team-high 187.3 traditional average.
Fitts, Kozma and Trievel lead the Golden Bears with impressive strike percentages. Fitts leads with a team-best 38.1, followed by Trievel with 33.1 and Kozma with 32.3.
Renee Riffey (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) and
Megan Bauter (Spring Lake, N.J./Manasquan) both have had key contributions to the Golden Bears with 16.67 and 15.86 frame averages, respectively.
The Golden Bears were ranked fourth in the most recent standings released by the ECC on Tuesday, March 21, trailing Adelphi, Felician and Franklin Pierce.
Kutztown's appearance at the ECC Championships will be its second, following an outstanding performance at the inaugural women's bowling championships last year. The Golden Bears went 5-0 in the first day of the tournament, earning a berth into the final four and the No. 1 seed heading into the final day of double elimination, bracket-style competition.
KU gained momentum on the final day of competition, opening the day with a 4-2 win over Felician before falling to Adelphi in game two, 4-2. KU returned to defeat Felician for the second time in a strong 4-0 shutout before AU once again toppled Kutztown, 4-1, to take the ECC Championship.
Kutztown had three bowlers earn All-Tournament Team distinction, including Fitts.
Despite heading into its final event of the season this weekend, the Maroon and Gold's young leaders look to gain key experience to make a triumphant return next year.
