LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's cross country team ended its 2017 season placing 12th out of 19 teams Saturday morning at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals, held at the Stern Athletic Complex at Lock Haven University.
 
Shippensburg University, who came in ranked first in the latest Atlantic Region poll, won the over team title with 35 points, ending with four runners inside the top-10 out of 129 total runners. Edinboro University and Indiana (Pa.) came in second and third respectively to qualify for the remaining automatic bids in the NCAA National Championships.
 
Individually, Robert Moser of Shippensburg won the 10k race, crossing the finish line with a time of 30:51.4, just edging out Edinboro's Austin Pondel at 30:52.5.
 
Only two KU runners competing Saturday have run in the NCAA Atlantic Regionals prior to this year.
 
For the first time this season, junior Xavier Gutierrez (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) led the way for the Golden Bears with a 36th place finish and a time of 32:42.1.
 
Freshman Derek Barney (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) had a top-50 finish, coming in at 50 with a time of 33:07.3. He led KU in each of the first three meets this season.
 
Sophomore Nick DeGennaro (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) improved on his position in the same event last year with a 58th place finish at 33:28.4. In 2016, he was 80th at a time of 36:24.7.
 
Jared Luckanitz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) finished 70th with a time of 33:48.8.
 
Chris Coates (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) last ran in the Regional meet in 2014, and the redshirt-junior was back this year and rounded out the top-five for KU in 95th place at 34:58.6.
 
Nate Burkhart (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) was the final Golden Bears runner. He came in at 109th at 36:00.1.
 
The 2018 season looks bright for Kutztown, as it should bring back its entire roster in the hopes of bigger and better things.
