KU Rides Four-Goal First Half to Win in Final Non-Conference Match

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team scored four goals in the span of 14:07 in the middle of the first half en route to defeating Holy Family, 4-1, in its final nonconference contest of the year on Monday evening at Keystone Field.

With the victory, KU (6-2) is off to its best start in a season since going 9-2 to begin the 2011 campaign.

Kutztown put its first eight shots of the match on net, scoring on its first two attempts, as well as three of its first four.

Alaina Curry (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) opened the scoring 11:47 into the game with her third goal of the year, and 22nd of her career, moving her into sixth place all-time in program history. Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) found Curry in the center of the box and the senior possessed the ball and took a dribble before sending her shot into the lower right portion of the net. For Mohr, her second assist of the season moved her into a tie for most on the team.

Just 1:06 later it was Mohr finding the back of the net. Ashley Engler (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown)'s long ball over the top of the defense found her fellow freshman teammate and Mohr did the rest, dribbling in and beating the goalkeeper in a one-on-on situation with a strike into the lower left netting.

Mohr then added another score less than four minutes later for her first-career two-goal game. Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) sent a low cross from the right into the center of the box and Mohr one timed it in for the 3-0 lead. With the assist, Zwiercan tied Mohr for the team-lead with her second assist of the season.

Zwiercan then completed the barrage with an unassisted score at the 19:06 mark. Once again, it was a long ball that led to the goal. The freshman controlled the pass and dribbled it off a defender's leg, with the deflection bouncing perfectly for one-on-one opportunity with the goalie that she buried to make the score 4-0.

KU had plenty of opportunities to add to its lead throughout the remainder of the contest as each team registered 23 shots throughout the 90 minutes, including a combined 29 attempts in the second half, but it was Holy Family (4-3-1) finally capitalizing on the offensive pressure in the 64th minute with a goal from Brianna Rock.

That was the lone blemish against freshman Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional), who made a career-high eight saves in net to improve to 3-1 on the year.

Sienna Smith also made eight stops for Holy Family as Kutztown held a 14-10 advantage in shots on net.

There were a combined three teams saves.

Next up for KU is two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference home matches in the span of 24 hours. The Golden Bears host Indiana (Pa.), who sits three points ahead of them in the league standings, on Friday, Sept, 30. at 1 p.m. before welcoming California (Pa.) to Keystone Field for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday, Oct. 1.
