KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Quarterback
Chad Barton (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) of the Kutztown University football team and pole vaulter
Emma Sullivan (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) of the women's track and field team were selected as the 2016 Kutztown University Male and Female Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year, respectively, announced at KU's annual All-Sports Banquet on Tuesday.
Â
Barton becomes the fifth football player to be named the KU Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In recent years, offensive lineman
Jared Haas earned the award in 2011 and wide receiver Josh Smith received the award in 2012.
Â
The two-year starting quarterback has racked up several academic and athletic awards in his redshirt-senior campaign, including being named to the National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society. He maintained a 3.55 GPA over his academic career at Kutztown and was most notably named to the 2015 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Second Team.
Â
In the classroom, Barton was a three-time Dean's List honoree and a four-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete during his time at KU. He was a semifinalist for the national scholar-athlete award in 2015, as well as being a two-time D2ADA Academic Achievement Award recipient.
Â
Barton guided the Golden Bears to 13 total wins in the last two seasons, including a 7-4 mark in 2015. He had his most prolific season through the air in 2015 as he threw for 28 touchdowns over 3,000 yards. Barton capped off his career ranking in the top-five in KU history in both single-season and career completions, passing yards and touchdown passes.
Â
Sullivan is just the second women's track and field athlete to win the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award as former dual-sport athlete Stephanie Williams won it in 2008 as a part of the cross country and track and field teams.
Â
The four-year member of the Golden Bear track and field team has an impressive 3.90 GPA during her time at Kutztown. Sullivan is a five-time Dean's List recipient, three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete and two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honoree. She was named to the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-District team and earned the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award for the 2013-14 season.
Â
The indoor and outdoor school-record holder in the pole vault has been a consistent stalwart in the event for the Golden Bears in all four of her seasons at KU. Sullivan broke through for her first career PSAC title in the pole vault during the 2016 indoor season.
Â
Sullivan shattered her own school-record in the indoor pole vault at the NCAA Indoor National Championships with a mark of 12-10 as she finished seventh, earning All-America status.
Â
The Phoenixville native is a five-time All-Region performer and four-time All-PSAC performer. Sullivan has placed in the top-five at the PSAC Championships in the pole vault in each of her seven appearances.
