Eric Lane (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham)'s three home runs in the opening game helped the Kutztown University baseball team split its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader at West Chester University Thursday. The Golden Bears took game one 13-3 before falling in game two, 8-6.
Lane led off the opener with a leadoff home run and
Mike Milazzo (Titusville, N.J./Notre Dame) followed it with a solo shot of his own to give KU a 2-0 lead after one. The Golden Bears (13-16, 4-6 PSAC) wouldn't look back for the rest of the game.
After West Chester cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second, the Kutztown offense responded with two runs in the top of the third off a two-RBI single by
Brady McNab (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Frederick C.C.)) to make it 4-1.
Derian Sarlat (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) scored off an error in the top of the fourth and Lane followed it up with his second homer of the day, a three-run shot to make it 8-1.
The homers kept coming, with
Joe Santospago (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Mercer County C.C.)) hitting a two-RBI home run in the top of the fifth to make it 10-1. Lane followed him up later in the inning, hitting his second three-run homer of the day and third on the game to make it 13-1. West Chester hit a homer of its own in the bottom of the seventh before getting retired, giving KU a 13-3 win.
It was the first three home run performance in KU single-game history in over 15 years. Lane's seven RBIs were the most by a Golden Bear since 2002. The five total team home runs were the most hit in a game by Kutztown in over 10 years.
Starter
Paul Piromalli (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West (Mercer County C.C.)) went five innings, allowing five hits and just one earned run with seven strikeouts to pick up his first victory of the season.
The Golden Bears started off game two just were they left off, getting a three-run home run by Milazzo in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead. In the top of the second,
Zach Schram (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North (Mercer County C.C.)) forced a walk to bring another run in and
Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, Md./West Chester Bayard Rustin (Harford C.C.)) hit a two-RBI single to left field to make it 6-0 KU.
West Chester responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and chipped away at the KU lead for the rest of the game. The Golden Rams scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-6. Kutztown couldn't bring around anyone else to score to drop game two.
Lane finished the afternoon going 3-for-3 with seven RBIs and four runs scored. Milazzo batted 3-for-6 with two home runs, four RBIs, and two runs scored. McNab went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Santospago finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sarlat caught game one and went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. O'Dell finished game two 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
