PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Kutztown University softball team made it six wins in a row, winning game one of its doubleheader, 5-3 against the University of the Sciences before mother nature rained out the second game Wednesday in the bottom of the first inning at McNeil Field.
The Golden Bears (15-7) were all knotted up 3-3 heading into the top of the sixth of game one before
Rachel Lawes (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) broke the tie with an RBI-single to give KU a 4-3 lead. The Golden Bears added another insurance run in the top of the seventh, getting an RBI hit-by-pitch by
Lisa Lawson (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley).
Pitcher
Savannah Nierintz (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) closed the door in the bottom half of the inning to finish off her complete-game performance. She allowed six hits and three runs - one earned - with three strikeouts to pick up her sixth win of the season.
Game two was able to start on time, but was halted after the top of the first inning and called due to rain and lightning in the area. A make up date for the second game still has yet to be determined.
Lawes led the Golden Bears on offense, finishing the day 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
Gabby Tareila (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) hit a two-RBI single in the top of the third and Lawson and
Bridget Newman (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) added KU's other two RBIs on the afternoon.
With the victory, KU has now won six games in a row and 10 of its past 11.
Ashley Lewis finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the University of the Sciences (1-8).
Kutztown returns to the diamond on Thursday, March 17, playing host to Goldey-Beacom College in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
