BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Ryan Appleby (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere) won his must-win heavyweight bout to tie Sunday's dual meet between the Kutztown University and LIU Post wrestling teams. As the lone pinfall of the match, Joe Balboni (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton (Old Dominion))'s pin at 174 broke the tiebreaker to award Kutztown a team point and a 19-18 road victory for its second straight dual win.
 
The Golden Bears trailed 18-15 heading into the final bout of the night. Appleby, the 10th-ranked heavyweight in Division II, came up big with a 9-3 decision to tie the team score at 18 apiece.
 
As the second official tiebreaker of the NCAA rulebook (Rule 3.15.2), Kutztown's 1-0 advantage in pinfalls gave it the edge, an additional team point and a 19-18 win. Balboni's pin at 174 came in the third period at 5:49.
 
Austin Petril (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby (Ursinus)) won his team-high seventh match of the season with a 6-5 decision at 125. Freshman Lucas Miller (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown Area) followed with an 8-4 win to put Kutztown out 6-0 early.
 
LIU Post took its first lead with four-straight wins, including a tech. fall and major decision, to hold a 15-6 lead through six bouts. Balboni and Collin Schildt (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) followed with victories, including a 6-2 decision for Schildt at 184, to tie the score at 15-15.
 
The teams split the final two matches at 197 and 285 to put the tiebreaking criteria into play.
 
Kutztown has nearly a month off from competition, as it takes the mat next on Jan. 10, 2017, for a dual meet at Millersville University beginning at 7 p.m.
