KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University wrestling team won three of the first four bouts against third-ranked Pitt-Johnstown Thursday night, including an upset win by redshirt-freshman
Chad Haegele (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) at 149, to highlight KU's 29-11 setback in its home-opener at Keystone Arena.
Haegele, wrestling in his fourth career match at KU and first at Keystone Arena, went up against 2014 national qualifier Cole Landowski at 149 pounds. He went to overtime against the veteran and forced the first takedown of the sudden victory period in a 6-4 victory.
Austin Petril (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby (Ursinus)) set the tone early with a 17-2 tech. fall at 125. He had multiple back points to stop the match at 5:57 for an early 5-0 KU lead.
Lucas Miller (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown Area), a true freshman, extended the team lead to 8-0 with a 4-3 win at 133. KU dropped 141 as Haegele's win gave KU an 11-3 lead through four bouts.
Pitt-Johnstown followed with three nationally-ranked wrestlers, including a Division I transfer, a defending national champion, and an All-American and two-time national qualifier, to roar back with 14 points over the next three matches.
It sparked a run of six straight wins to end the match for the Mountain Cats.
Kutztown returns to action at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Lock Haven University.
