READING, Pa. – The 17th-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team opened Sunday's second day of its inaugural Bud Whitman Memorial tournament with three straight wins. KU went 4-6 over the weekend to wrap up the season-opening weekend for the Golden Bears at Berks Lanes in Reading.
Kutztown (4-6) was led in the opening match by
Jess Garzio (Ewing, N.J./Ewing). Garzio rolled a team-high 193 to lead KU's 769-697 win over Medaille.
Jenn Fitts (Birdsboro, Pa./Twin Valley) threw the first 200+ game of the day for KU with a 206 in a 901-877 win over 20th-ranked Saint Francis Brooklyn. Fitts averaged 170.4 in five matches Sunday, second on the team.
Sophomore
Renee Riffey (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) led the way for Kutztown with a 175.4 average. She threw a 197 against No. 13 LIU Brooklyn to lead KU's winning effort, 853-849. It was Riffey's best match of the day.
Sydney Vigil (La Plata, Md./La Plata) threw a 225 against 12th-ranked Delaware State - a match KU dropped 1030-908. KU dropped its final match of the day to Duquesne, 922-775.
Delaware State won Sunday's traditional event with a total pinfall of 5130. It went 9-1 over the weekend. KU finished with a total pinfall of 4134 on Sunday, good for 13th.
Chestnut Hill's Sara Kirch held the best average Sunday at 217.4.
The Golden Bears return to action next weekend at Sacred Heart's one-day invite on Saturday, Oct. 22.
