KUTZTOWN, Pa. – For the second consecutive year, Kutztown University wrestling coach
Robert Fisher and women's soccer coach
Erik Burstein have been named the Kutztown Men's and Women's Coaches of the Year for the 2014-15 year.
Fisher led his 2014-15 team to the most successful postseason of his 15-year tenure as head coach. Kutztown finished fourth at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships, the best finish in school history, boasted a program-record eight regional medalists and finished third at the Super Region I Championships, tying the best finish under Fisher. KU had four national qualifiers that tied for 14th place in St. Louis at the NCAA National Championship, the best finish in program history. KU crowned two All-Americans for the fourth time in KU history, and a two-time national champion.
Ziad Haddad was Fisher's most decorated wrestler. He was a two-time national champion, a three-time All-American, and qualified for nationals in each of his three years at KU. He was Kutztown's first National Wrestler of the Year, and won two regional championships and one PSAC title.
Fisher won his first KU Coach of the Year last year for his wrestling program and is now a two-time winner.
Burstein led the Golden Bears to a 15-5-1 record and the runner-up trophy in the PSAC. KU qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the last six years. During the season, KU enjoyed a school-record nine-game winning streak and celebrated Burstein becoming the winningest coach in program history. KU was ranked in the national poll throughout the entire season.
Burstein guided the program's third All-American in program history, and KU's first-ever Daktronics Atlantic Region and PSAC Offensive Athlete of the Year,
Sam Costello. She was one of three Golden Bears to be named All-Region selections.
Burstein is the defending KU Coach of the Year after winning his first career honor last year, making him a two-time winner.
Members of the KU athletic department staff voted upon the nominees to determine KU's year-end awards. The awards will be formally presented at halftime of the Sept. 19 football game vs. Gannon at 1:05 p.m.
