Box Score 1 HTML Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2 KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University softball team was shut out 3-0 in its opening game on Tuesday afternoon against Millersville University. KU had taken a 1-0 lead in the nightcap, but had it suspended due to rain at North Campus Field.
The Golden Bears (19-8, 7-4 PSAC East) and Marauders (13-15, 5-8) will make-up their suspended game at a date TBD. The game was initially halted at 4:37 p.m., and due to steady rainfall, the game was officially suspended at 5:37 p.m. KU was leading the game 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning with two outs and
Rachel Lawes on second base.
Danielle Amato was at the plate with a 0-1 count.
Kutztown was being no-hit by Millersville's Cassidy Pinchorski for 5.2 innings in the opener, until a two-out single by
Colleen Smith snapped the streak. Kutztown had two hits in the seventh to put runners on second and third with no outs and bringing the tying run to the plate, but a strikeout, popup and a groundout ended the game and kept KU off the board.
After starting the year 13-0 in the circle, pitcher
Savannah Nierintz has suffered two consecutive losses for Kutztown. In her complete game effort on Tuesday, she allowed six hits and three runs with five strikeouts.
The second game had three combined hits when it was suspended. KU pitcher
Dominique Ficara held Millersville to one hit in the early innings. Lawes gave KU the 1-0 lead with a softly-hit infield single to score a runner from third base with two outs in the third inning. She then stole second base, which was followed by the suspension.
Kutztown returns to action on Friday, April 10 when it travels to Mansfield University for a 1:30 p.m. start.
